opportunities for growth

- 2004 self-portrait in metal -
“Disappointment to a noble soul is what cold water is to burning metal;
it strengthens, tempers, intensifies, but never destroys it.”

- Edda M. Sevilla (b. 1949)

just sing a song

one of my son's favorite songs has become a favorite of mine too...

Sing, sing a song,
Sing out loud,
Sing out strong,
Sing of good things not bad,
Sing of happy not sad.

Sing, sing a song
Make it simple to last
Your whole life long
Don't worry that it's not
Good enough for anyone
Else to hear
Just sing, sing a song.

Sing, sing a song
Let the world sing along
Sing of love there could be
Sing for you and for me.

Sing, sing a song
Make it simple to last
Your whole life long
Don't worry that it's not
Good enough for anyone
Else to hear
Just sing, sing a song.

full moon tonight

The sweet simple things of life...

A child’s smile...

A firefly’s light...

A friend’s laughter...

A juicy peach...

A lover’s kiss...

"I am beginning to learn that it is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all."

- Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867-1957)

...remember to celebrate the full moon tonight...

de la naturaleza

- mixed media -
“Mi relaciĂłn con la mĂşsica viene de la naturaleza, no de la academia. Si yo hubiera estudiado, quizá serĂa una afamada cantante. Pero no Chavela Vargas” - Chavela Vargas (1919-2012)

unexpected soul mates

- mixed media from ROMANCE series -
"I don't believe in rules.  I think it's the heart that should talk.  The first thing about love is that you have to love yourself.  No relationship will work unless you do...I wanted to be his friend.  I thought he would be a good friend to have.  But we were completely taken over by passion, and it was completely, utterly unexpected on both sides.  That made it more exciting, because it was so unexpected...Yes, I do believe in soul mates." - Diane von FĂĽrstenberg (b. 1946)

wild desire

- mixed media from ROMANCE series -
“I'm falling in love with somebody I have no right to fall in love with...I can't fall in love with this man, but it's just like a ring of fire.”- June Carter Cash (1929-2003)

Love is a burning thing,
And it makes a fiery ring
Bound by wild desire
I fell into a ring of fire.

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher,
And it burns, burn, burns,
The ring of fire, the ring of fire.

The taste of love is sweet
When hearts like ours meet.
I fell for you like a child
Oh, but the fire ran wild.

from my journals

vestida de agua,

camina la diosa

- sombras bailando en las paredes del alma

- ella lleva olas del mar en sus caderas

- ella lleva luz de luna en sus sonrisa

~~~~~~~
dressed in waters,
the goddess walks
- shadows dance upon soul’s walls
- ocean waves at her hips
- moonlight in her smile
El Poeta Carpintero
DĂ©jame hablar contigo -
-- Por RaĂşl Xavier GarcĂa
-- A Julia Casimira Sacasa
"Esa inquietud. Esta necesidad de saber
lo que no es tuyo ni mĂo,
es lo que te obliga a obedecer:
nos lleva desprotegido hacia el peligro.
Más tarde, con los golpes que te da la vida,
con ellos puedes empezar a comprender
y medir distancias, si caminar sobre el mar
o en las brasas del fuego.
Y en la serenidad te niegas a sĂ mismo,
serĂa como huir sin esperar, amar sin ser herida.
Y mañana correr la sangre en abundancia
no asĂ, el asma." - RaĂşl Xavier GarcĂa, "Poeta Carpintero" (b. 1931)
my undressed soul
- mixed media from journals -
" Te doy mi alma desnuda,
como estatua a la cual ningĂşn cendal escuda.
Desnuda con el puro impudor
de un fruto, de una estrella o una flor;
de todas esas cosas que tienen la infinita
serenidad de Eva antes de ser maldita.
De todas esas cosas,
frutos, astros y rosas,
que no sienten vergĂĽenza del sexo sin celajes
y a quienes nadie osara fabricarles ropajes.
Sin velos, como el cuerpo de una diosa serena
¡que tuviera una intensa blancura de azucena!
Desnuda, y toda abierta de par en par
¡por el ansia del amar! "
- Juana de Ibarbourou (1892 – 1929)
dance with wildness
"It doesn't interest me what you do for a living.
I want to know what you ache for
and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.
It doesn’t interest me how old you are.
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool
for love
for your dream
for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon...
I want to know if you have touched the centre of your own sorrow
if you have been opened by life’s betrayals
or have become shriveled and closed
from fear of further pain.
I want to know if you can sit with pain
mine or your own
without moving to hide it
or fade it
or fix it.
I want to know if you can be with joy
mine or your own
if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes
without cautioning us
to be careful
to be realistic
to remember the limitations of being human.
It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me
is true.
I want to know if you can
disappoint another
to be true to yourself.
If you can bear the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul.
If you can be faithless
and therefore trustworthy.
I want to know if you can see Beauty
even when it is not pretty
every day.
And if you can source your own life
from its presence.
I want to know if you can live with failure
yours and mine
and still stand at the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon,
“Yes.”
It doesn’t interest me
to know where you live or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up
after the night of grief and despair
weary and bruised to the bone
and do what needs to be done
to feed the children.
It doesn’t interest me who you know
or how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand
in the centre of the fire
with me
and not shrink back.
It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom
you have studied.
I want to know what sustains you
from the inside
when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone
with yourself
and if you truly like the company you keep
in the empty moments."
only one of you in all of time
- mixed media -
